Faith of our Fathers: Recommended Resources on Our Christian Heritage

These first three books provide a good introduction to a number of important people in our history.

Character Counts: Leadership Qualities in Washington, Wilberforce, Lincoln and  Solzhenitsyn characteredited by Os Guinness (920 CHARACTER) Reflective chapters on faith, character, and virtue.


Reformation Heroes, by Dian Kleyn and Joel Beeke (920 KLEYN) With large print and numerous illustrations, this is good for family reading.


The Legacy of Sovereign Joy: God's Triumphant Grace in the Lives of Augustine, Luther, and Calvin,
by John Piper (902 PIPER). This is the first in a series of short biographies to encourage and challenge our lives today.

Amazing Grace (DVD 791 AMAZING) This is the 2007 motion picture of Wilberforce and his fight to end the slave trade in England.

C. H. SPURGEON: PREACHER OF THE WORD (1834-1892)

The Power of Prayer in a Believer's Life, by CH Spurgeon (248.32 SPURGEON). Prayer was at the core of his preaching and his church.

 

 



DIETRICH BONHOEFFER: THE THEOLOGIAN WHO CHALLENGED HITLER (1906-1945)
Bonhoeffer : Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy : A Righteous Gentile vs. the Third Reich, by Eric Metaxas (921 BONHOEFFER). This highly acclaimed new biography gives an inside view of the man and his time.

Life Together, by Dietrich Bonhoeffer (248.4 BONHOEFFER). Not as famous as Cost of Discipleship, but this is perhaps his most valuable book for us today.


C.S. LEWIS: THE ATHEIST OXFORD DON TURNED APOLOGIST (1898-1963)
Surprised by Joy, by C. S. Lewis (921 LEWIS). His own account of his life and conversion to Christ.


Mere Christianity, by C. S. Lewis (239 LEWIS). His most famous, and still valuable, defense of the faith.
