The Uyghur (YOU) - CCPC's Adopted People Group
Location: Central Asia
Population: 10 million
Ethnicity: Turkic
Religion: Sunni Muslim
Diet: Flat bread, mutton, fruit, noodles
Products: Wool, silk, melons, carpets
The YOU people of Central Asia have a unique language and culture. A hospitable people noted for their love of music and drama, they are primarily farmers and traders. Men wear embroidered skull caps, while women wear veils or colorful scarves.
In the late 1800s a group of Swedish missionaries brought the Gospel to the YOU and saw a church of more than 100 members established. This work ended tragically in 1938 during political unrest and persecution. Believing men were martyred and women were forcibly married to Muslims. With such little exposure to the Gospel, the YOU people remain one of the least evangelized people on the earth.
Prayer Points:
1. Pray for the YOU church. Pray for the few believers who struggle to grow in the face of persecution. Pray for emerging spiritual leaders.
2. Pray for the believers of other ethnic backgrounds who surround the YOU people. Pray that they would have cultural sensitivity and a heart for the YOU people's salvation. Pray that the enmity between the races would be broken.
3. Pray for the many towns and villages without Christian messengers. YOU people have reported "signs and wonders" encounters with Christ. Pray for more workers with language and discipleship skills to follow up these experiences and to see churches planted.
4. Pray for spiritually discerning people with language and culture knowledge to produce audio, video and radio materials for evangelism and discipleship.
